Blended whisky is the backbone of the whisky industry. It accounts for over 60% of all scotch whisky exports and it is a growing market. So why are whisky drinkers so reluctant to enjoy blends? Could it be their worries about quality? The low cost of the product undermining confidence? Bad experiences with other blended whisky? or is it just snobbiness?
This whisky is a blend, from a family run female-led distillery, called Jackton Distillery. It was a product that they released to showcase their distillery, whilst they waited out the long period before their single malt arrived. It aims to draw people in and to give them an accessible, versatile spirit.
Aroma: Spicy cinnamon, foam bananas and sweet dried fruits. Drawing all those flavours together, it reminds me of Jamaican ginger cake.
Taste: At first there is a mix of pear drops and tinned tropical fruit syrup sweetness.
This gives way to a creamy, cereal led middle, that is gentle and silky.
Finally, there is a warming spice, which sits somewhere between sweet sticky ginger cake and fruit cake. It is sweet, sticky and warming. This finish is relatively short, but the warming quality remains on the palate.
Real Dram Factor: A solid 7.0
You will like this if: you remember eating Mc Vitie’s Jamaican Ginger Cake as fondly as I do.
