Revisiting places you haven’t been to in a while is always a mixed blessing. A lot depends on your previous experience, because it sets your expectations for this one. A good memory brings with it high expectations, which can easily be dashed, spoiling both the present experience and the past. However, bad memories can be very difficult to overcome – leading me neatly on to Jura 14.
It has been a long time since I’ve had any expectation that a Jura experience will be a positive one, but I noticed this bottle in my parents’ cabinet and tried to keep an open mind.
Aroma: Pear drops, cut grass, and warming ginger cake spice. Inviting, if a little heavy on the orchard fruits.
Taste: This whisky starts with a sugary-sweet butter toffee note that is creamy and full of vanilla. It opens up to crisp green apples—fruity, acidic, and refreshing.
Finish: The finish is all about oak, vanilla, and sweet cinnamon spice. It clings to the top of the palate, then descends and warms the throat.
Real Dram Factor: This whisky is moreish, full of sticky sweetness and orchard fruits — 7.4
You will like this if: you count Jamaican ginger cake covered in custard as a top-tier pudding.
