I have never been very good at sticking with subscription services. I am far too much of a control freak and my short attention span means that often I lose interest in what they send within the first few deliveries. This means that I have a long collection of usernames and passwords that I don’t use anymore and a fair few pin badges and stickers lying around the house. It also means that I am wary of signing up for new ones, in case I saddle myself with the difficult emotional admin of saying goodbye to another customer service person.
So, for a while, I have resisted the urge to join The Summerton Club. I have loitered on the fringes, watching with interest as friends get their bi-monthly bottles and wondered if I should join. Some months, I have even had the joy of a cheeky sample from one of their great looking bottles. But, when my good friend Tom announced he and his family were moving away and my access to sample drams dried up, I knew it was time to take the plunge.
When you join, they spin the wheel and send you a random bottle from their back catalogue. This Benromach was my starter bottle and acted as a gateway whilst I awaited my first bi-monthly club bottle.
Aroma: The ubiquitous nose of a classic sherry casked whisky – full of dark cherry, vanilla, oak and musty underground storage.
Taste: Initially silky sweet, with a big fruity whoosh – maraschino cherries – sweet, fruity and full of vanilla
Ashy, green tobacco, that has a gentle cinnamon spice and a darkly fruity note. This is akin to a fruity dark chocolate or black coffee.
The final notes are creamy vanilla, warming cinnamon and liquid fruit cake.
Real Dram Factor: I honestly feel like this whisky might be my soulmate – 8.9
You will like this if: you like me.
