On Sunday, I organised a Burns’ Night blind whisky tasting at The Fallen Tree micropub in Clevedon. I chose six whiskies, one from each whisky-producing region in Scotland, so that we could take a six-whisky tour of the country. First up, we visited the Islands, travelling the short journey across the water from Oban, along the Sound of Mull, to Tobermory.

As the first whisky of the night, it was important to find a solid, great-value dram with loads of flavour that would be a popular place to start, even for people who are new to whisky. It also helped me talk through the difference between peated and unpeated spirits.

Aroma: Citrus peel, buttery fudge, gentle sweet cinnamon spice and crisp green apples.

Taste: This whisky starts with sweet, buttery, creamy vanilla notes that evoke custard, crumpets and fudge from paper bags. It becomes fruity, with fresh orange juice and crisp apples like notes. Then finally round out, becoming gently spiced with cinnamon and clove warmth.

Real Dram Factor: 7.9 – An incredible whisky at a great price.

You will like this if: you like your whisky sweet, spicy and full of fruit.

ABV: 46.3%

Price: £35-45

Source: Purchased for a tasting.
