I love a whisky tasting, they are great for many reasons, here are my top three:
- It is always good to try a range of whiskies from the same distillery because it gives you a much better feel for the type of spirit that they produce.
- You get a chance to hear a distillery’s story and find out about their aspirations, passions, and motivations as a company. This can often be super interesting.
- Whisky is made to be shared. Friends and experience are what make it fun.
But it can be hard to make time for them and even get to them if you are not near a good whisky bar. This is what makes ‘Tweet’ Tastings so good. They are free to sign up for; all you need is an X or Bluesky account, and you can take part from the comfort of your own sofa.
This week was a SPEY tasting, so I thought that I would share my favourite of the four whiskies as a review.
Aroma: Honey sweetness, poached pears, spiced nutmeg and buttery pastry.
Taste: At first, this whisky is creamy and sweet, with bright, super-fruity notes reminiscent of homemade plum jam.
The middle remains sweet but deepens into a darker brown sugar note. This is layered with stewed apples, cinnamon spice, and even a hint of dark chocolate.
The finish is warming, carrying a gentle chilli heat that lingers on the lips, along with a subtle floral lift.
Real Dram Factor: The Speyside whisky market is a crowded one with some really big money behind some very famous distilleries, but for us, the best whisky is to be found at the smaller, less visited and often less lauded distilleries. SPEY distillery fits firmly in this last category, and this whisky is a great example of what they offer. It is fruity, warming, and full of Speyside sweetness.
You will like this if: you like rich, fruity whiskies.
